Unique theatre show makes people go to sleep

LONDON: If a show at a theatre makes you sleep, it usually means it was boring. But not at Barbican in London where they have a show designed to send you to sleep.

'Lullaby' has been specially created to send the audience to sleep and consists of things such as soothing storytelling and singing octopuses.If that wasn't enough, the audience lie in pre-booked beds and attend the 'sublime sleepover' in their pyjamas - ready to be lulled to sleep by the slumber-inducing show.After watching the action and falling asleep, the audience are left to sleep before being woken and served breakfast the following morning at 7.30am… which sure beats a Travelodge.

Simon Casson, producer of the show, says he has fallen asleep in shows including Lord of the Rings and Oliver so came up with the idea of creating a specifically designed show to send people to sleep.So far no one has stayed awake to the end of the show and the cast have to put up with snores rather than a round of applause.

Student Wears Jeans For 15 Months Without Washing Them

Josh Le, a student at the University of Alberta, wore a pair of skin-tight jeans from September 2009 to December 2010, without washing them, just to see how much bacteria would build-up on them.The pair of jeans in question was actually made of raw denim, which isn’t treated with any chemicals, so Le thought they would make a perfect home for bacteria, in the course of 15 months. He declared he wore them almost every day, which is pretty amazing, considering that apart from a few wear marks, they looked pretty clean.

When the 15 months were up, Josh Le took his “contaminated” pair of jeans to one of his teachers’ laboratory, to be tested for bacteria. Professor Rachel McQueen took samples, then washed the jeans and asked Josh to wear them for another two weeks, then tested for bacteria again. Amazingly, the results of the two samples were very similar – five types of skin bacteria, and between 8,500 and 10,000 bacterial units, mostly in the crotch area. McQueen concluded that people could in fact wash their jeans less often in order to protect the environment, without fear of hazardous bacterial contamination.
However, Josh Le admitted he did have some problems with the odour of the jeans, which started smelling funny after only a few months. He solved the problem by triple bagging them and putting them in the freezer.

Held every six years, in the Nagano area of Japan, Onbashira Festival is believed to have continued uninterruptedly, for the last 1200 years.Onbashira, literally translated as “the sacred pillars”, is a Japanese tradition that symbolizes the renewal of Suwa Grand Shrine. It consists of two phases: Yamadashi and Satobiki, the first held in April, and the second in May. Before Onbashira begins, 16 tree trunks, cut form 200-year-old Japanese fir trees are cut down. Each tree can be up to 1 meter across, 16 meters tall and weigh up to 12 tons.

Now, escape traffic jams with flying bike

An Australian man has invented the world's first flying motorcycle in his garage, and he claims it can reach an altitude of 10,000ft and speeds of over 100mph.

Christopher Malloy, 32, put his entire life-savings into the project, and it took him two and a half years to complete his futuristic creation, which has been dubbed the Hoverbike.

Malloy, a former helicopter pilot, built the incredible machine in his Sydney garage using a custom-built carbon-fibre airframe and a BMW engine.

The futuristic prototype has the potential to travel up to 92 miles or for about 45 minutes on one tank of fuel and is expected to cost more than 45,000 pounds.

So far the bike, which weighs 270 kilograms, has only been tested while tethered to the ground to prevent it flying too high. But plans to test it's capabilities without any restrictions are set to go-ahead soon.

He said the basic principle was similar to that of a Chinook helicopter and a normal motorbike.

Turtles crossing runway cause New York flight delays

Flights at John F. Kennedy International Airport were delayed shortly on Wednesday when about 150 diamondback terrapin turtles were spotted crossing a runway, authorities said.The reptiles were trying to get to the other side of the runway to lay eggs on the sandy shores of the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, which borders the airport.

Ron Marsico, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which oversees operation of the region's airports, pilots from Jet Blue and other airlines halted their flights to let the expectant reptiles pass."Flight delays attributed to turtles were minor, about 15 minutes or so," he said.Port Authority staff rushed out to the tarmac where, between takeoffs and landings, they scooped up the turtles and helped them on their way.Naturalists said the 185-acre Jamaica Bay may be the diamondback's most popular breeding ground in North America.

"It happens every year at about this time. It's the great migration, and this is the peak of the season," he said.
Flights were rerouted to another runway, as waves of turtles pressed on with their march to the bay.
"At one point, we decided to heed Mother Nature and use other runways. This is not impacting flights," Marsico said.
